The Ampersand Hotel London Review: Luxury 5 Star Hotel

If you’re planning a trip to London with the family, The Ampersand Hotel London is a luxury boutique hotel that delivers comfort, convenience, and charm.

Located in the heart of South Kensington, this hotel not only offers sophisticated decor and excellent service but also thoughtful touches that make it an ideal choice for families. With an award-winning afternoon tea, cozy rooms, and easy access to London’s major attractions, here’s everything you need to know about a stay at The Ampersand.

Location

The Ampersand Hotel sits along Harrington Road, just a one-minute walk from the South Kensington Tube Station, offering immediate access to London’s Piccadilly lines and other central lines.

For families, this location is a dream, with a short stroll leading you to some of London’s top attractions, including the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum, and the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Just minutes away are Hyde Park and Kensington Palace, offering plenty of outdoor spaces for kids to explore, and the famed Royal Albert Hall is also close by.

The area is dotted with cafes, shops, and family-friendly restaurants, making it easy to find a place to eat after a day of sightseeing.

For those arriving via Heathrow Airport, the convenient Piccadilly Line makes travel to and from the hotel straightforward, cementing the location as a huge plus.

First Impressions

The Ampersand makes a great first impression, blending original Victorian features like its pillared foyer and grand staircase with a modern, chic design. Though the lobby is compact, the friendly front desk staff makes check-in smooth and welcoming.

The decor throughout the hotel has a sophisticated urban feel with stylish details like deep, moody colors, exposed brick walls, and touches of silver and glass, giving it a cosmopolitan edge that feels unique among London hotels.

Kids receive a warm welcome with special treats like a fun rubber ducky and a stuffed animal, which set a family-friendly tone.

We were particularly charmed by the hotel’s drawing rooms, featuring deep sofas, high ceilings, and floor-to-ceiling windows – a great spot to relax with the family or read up on the local area.

The Apero restaurant, located on the lower ground floor, serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner and also offers the hotel’s famous science-inspired afternoon tea with treats that delighted my kids.

They adored the Jurassic Afternoon Tea, a playful take on a traditional tea with items like fossil-shaped cookies and desserts served in “petri dishes” – it’s an experience that really captures The Ampersand’s creative approach.

The hotel offers two of the wonderful Afternoon Tea options that I dive into in my post about the best afternoon tea for kids in London!

Room Experience

Our Deluxe Room was beautifully decorated, with a plush king-size bed, a cozy bench at the foot, and a small desk area. This is the 3rd room category they have, above a Single and Double Room and a Superior Room.

While the room was compact, it made the most of its space and included amenities like an LCD TV, air conditioning, and an iPod dock.

We got a slightly larger room than normal for our room category, which accommodated a rollaway bed – max 3 people in a room in this category

We had a rollaway bed added to accommodate one of the kids, and although the space was tight, the layout was comfortable. Each hotel room comes with complimentary soft drinks in the minibar, which my son excitedly dubbed “luxury apple juice.” It was a thoughtful perk that instantly made the stay memorable for him!

The en suite bathroom was stylishly designed with white metro tiles and featured a spacious walk-in shower. While there was a slight shortage of storage space in the bathroom, the room overall felt well-equipped.

The only downside to the bathroom was very limited storage space

Higher room categories, like the deluxe studios and suites, offer more space, which could be ideal for larger families or longer stays.

The hotel guests also have access to a 24-hour fitness center and a games room with table tennis and art equipment, adding an extra layer of convenience and entertainment for families.

Staying at The Ampersand Hotel in South Kensington means being perfectly positioned to explore some of the most iconic attractions and hidden gems in Central London. Here’s a guide to the top things to do just a short walk or tube ride away from this five star boutique hotel.

Before I even start, though, I need to say that if you have kids, you absolutely have to book one of the afternoon teas that The Ampersand offers. We adored the science themed tea, and they also offer a dinosaur themed tea. I know I said it before, but it is really so fun!
